Hot chili and cold brews are game day classics. Inspired by the annual Big Game, we threw our own Pottery Barn chili competition, with your chili recipes as the winners. Have your own chili cook–off to taste recipes and show off your style. Accompanied by self–serve finger foods, and paired with icy bottles of beer, the event is strictly casual. That's good news for the host, who only needs to prepare toppings and snacks. With football as the main event, all you need is a simple set up and lots of food to throw a first–place party.
We've featured winning recipes for Best Traditional Meat, Vegetarian and White Bean Chilis from our chili contest. You may even want to include our downloadable Chili–cook–off score cards for your own competition. Guests should bring their homemade chili prepared according to their favorite recipe, which they should also write down and bring to share. The more chilis, the merrier.
As the host, you can provide the cornbread and toppings like sour cream, shredded cheeses, avocado, cilantro, corn chips and salsas. Collect the scorecards, tally the votes and declare the winners.
Set the table casually and with designated locations for all the chili entries. Put toppings, sides and condiments in the center and chili stations around the perimeter of the dining table. Use signs to indicate the cook's name, show the recipe card and have the ladle at the ready. Use wood pedestals or trivets to keep your table from getting scorched by hot pots.
On the buffet, keep a bucket of beers on ice, as well as beer mugs, plates, heavy bowls, flatware and lots of napkins. Add some fun touches like our homemade heat meters, like the one's our stylist created, that lets you know how spicy the salsas are. One fresh red chili on a skewer is mild, but three is fiery hot. Mexican style pig bowls hold herbs and classic American bean pots keep the chili warm. Carved wood bottle openers shaped like old beer bottles are an authentic addition to the table.
