Cranberries with Orange Zest and Port

This is a favorite recipe for a special cranberry sauce that I have been making for 10 years.

Even when I go to someone else's home for Thanksgiving, I always bring it!

Makes about 4 ½ cups


  • 1 cup port
  • 6 cups fresh cranberries (1 ½ pounds), picked over and rinsed
  • 1 ½ cups sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons orange zest, finely chopped
  • ¼ teaspoon salt


  • In a large skillet bring the port to a boil over high heat.
  • Add the cranberries and stir over medium heat until they begin to pop, about 5 minutes.
  • Add the sugar, orange zest, salt and stir constantly until the sugar dissolves and the mixture begins to simmer, 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Let cool before serving.
