Rug Pads

While rugs can provide a lot of usefulness simply by adding beauty and softness to a room, ultimately, they need to be able to stay put and adequately protect your floors in addition to looking good. While many of our rugs come pre-made with permanent anti-skid rubber or latex backings, it is still a good idea to pair your rug purchase with one of Pottery Barn’s cushy, protective rug pads. Available in a variety of styles that you can choose depending on how much plushness you want underfoot or where you plan to place your floor covering, our rug pads are an easy addition to your rug purchase.

Among our offerings in this product category is an outdoor rug pad that’s perfect for use under one of our durable, flatwoven outdoor rugs. Because some of our outdoor rugs are double-sided and don’t have their own protective antiskid layer built in, it’s an especially good idea to select an appropriately sized outdoor pad for one of these rugs. Not only will this simple grid-style rug pad help keep your outdoor rug in place, it will also provide some airflow between the rug and whatever surface you have it on, be it a concrete slab, wooden decking, outdoor tile or the ground in your yard. This airflow space will allow the underside of the rug to dry out if it gets wet from rain, morning dew condensation or hose sprays, meaning a longer life of mildew-free enjoyment and cleanliness for your outdoor rug.

Some of our rug pads are made with eco-friendly materials, including GREENGUARD Gold Certified materials that meet specific standards for chemical emissions. If you’re concerned with off-gassing and other environmental safety issues in your home, you may want to focus on these rug pads for greater peace of mind. Overall, though, whatever type of rug pad you choose, you will be enhancing your home’s safety by preventing your rugs from slipping and sliding on your flooring, whether it’s tile, hardwood or laminate. Use any of our rug pad types inside your home; even our outdoor rug pad is suitable for use inside, though it is not advisable to use our thicker indoor rug pads in outdoor spaces.

We offer our rug pads in different sizes, allowing you to customize your padding to the size of your rug. If our dimensions don’t quite match up with your rug, however, you can simply trim them down with a pair of scissors so there’s no overlap. This means that if, for example, you have a custom-made square rug in your entryway, you could order a rug pad that matches the dimensions on one side and then cut the non-matching side to fit perfectly underneath your rug so the pad doesn’t show. It’s best to err on the side of a larger rug pad so you can cut the excess off and ensure your rug sits evenly on the floor instead of hanging off the sides of a too-small rug pad.

While it is important to choose the right size and style of rug pad for your space, you may also be concerned about finding the right kind of pad for your rug and the type of flooring you have. Many of our rug pad options work well with all types of rugs, including natural fiber rugs that sometimes require thicker, uniform padding to stay in their best shape. Our rug pads are often also suitable for use with radiant-heat flooring, meaning you don’t have to worry about melting or otherwise damaging a rug pad when you have your heat on. With our rug pads, you can keep hand-knotted rugs in their best shape, provide extra cushion on hard flooring and prevent slipping when you, your family and even pets walk and play in your home.
