Duvet Covers and Shams

“Duvet” is the French word for “comforter,” and the French version of a comforter is slightly different than the American design. A duvet cover is like a large pillow case that encases a down insert or a even another comforter you may have. You can also think of a duvet cover as a comforter cover. It’s as simple as that, but its design possibilities are almost limitless. Let us at Pottery Barn give you a few more tips and ideas on choosing the right duvet cover sets and pillow shams that can turn your bed’s coziness level up a notch or two.

Why Use a Duvet Cover?

A duvet cover is one of the most functional, flexible and decorative bedding items. For example, if you have a comforter in a color or design that’s no longer inspiring you, consider slipping it into a duvet cover to instantly change its look. A duvet cover set comes with pillow shams to complete your bedding ensemble. If you prefer sleeping under a warm down duvet insert, you can protect it by using a duvet cover.

Duvet Cover Sizes and Fabrics

Duvet covers come in the same sizes as comforters for various bed sizes. All you have to do is match them up for an exact fit – queen with queen and king with king, and so on. You can find duvet cover sets and pillow shams in cotton and linen blends, cotton sateen and 100-percent-organic cotton with the Oeko-Tex® certified mark, which assures that the fabric is produced in a sustainable, eco-friendly manner. Duvet cover sets come in all the beautiful colors and patterns, including some with elegant appliqué effects, that you’re used to finding with comforters. Many duvet covers also coordinate with the soft colors of bedroom rugs for extra cohesion in your bedroom design.

To keep your duvet insert in place, you can find duvet covers that feature button closures at the top to keep the insert securely inside. Interior ties help keep the insert from slipping, too. Simply tie the fabric around each corner of the comforter or insert to keep it in place.

As with sheets and comforters, duvet covers come in thread counts that range from 200 up to 700 or more. A 700-thread-count duvet cover, for example, has superior softness and a smooth feel, along with the benefit of being wrinkle-resistant.

Pillow Sham Details

Pillow shams that are included with duvet cover sets add luxurious detailing to your bed. Shams come in standard, Euro and king sizes to accommodate pillows. Most designs include a plain, smocked or ruffled flange around the sham for extra texture and detailing. Shams typically feature an envelope-style enclosure.

A duvet cover is quick to slip on and off to wash. It’s an easy way to freshen up your bed without having to bring your insert or comforter to the dry cleaner or to a commercial laundry with large enough equipment to fit your bedding. With good care, your duvet cover can serve you for years – or at least until you decide to switch up your bedroom decor.
