What’s at the heart of farmhouse decor? It’s the appeal of the long and narrow or round and simple lines of a farmhouse dining table that’s both relaxed and welcoming in its style. Farmhouse dining tables come in rustic and modern styles, both with timeless looks and materials. Let us at Pottery Barn guide you in selecting the ideal farmhouse dining table for your gatherings.

Table Tops and Legs

Rectangular or round, unadorned tops typically have different finishes to bring out the natural beauty of wood variations, including light waxes or hand-applied stains and distressed finishes. Darker finishes also pair well with leather dining chairs for a slightly more formal look in your dining room. Tables with planks or smooth tops are crafted from all types of woods, from salvaged or reclaimed pine to durable mango wood and other varieties. Rectangular tables can run about 92" long, while round tables are usually anywhere between 48" to 60" in diameter. Many styles have leaf extensions that elongate an already long rectangular table to sometimes over 100" long. That’s ideal for making extra space to welcome dinner guests into your home.

Unembellished, straightforward legs are common on farmhouse tables. Tables with four legs are the most lightweight of all models. Some tables with legs enjoy more stability thanks to their stylized forged iron straps that attach to the tabletop and the legs.

Table Trestles and Pedestals

Trestle bases are designed to fit more people around the table and offer more leg room, too. There are no legs that get in the way of anyone who wants to sit at the corners of the table. A trestle has a distinctive design with a stretcher between two end panels, legs or X-shaped supports to stabilize the top. It’s a classic table base that brings a bit of country style and appeal into your dining room.

Pedestal bases are common on rectangular and round tables. Long rectangular tables may have double pedestals, and round tables often have single pedestals. The heftier the pedestal is, the more stable the table can be. Round farmhouse tables, however, might have more dramatic, sculptural pedestals that look wonderful in modern homes. Some table designs combine the helpful features of both bases with double pedestals and a trestle. These substantial bases are designed with pedestals at each end of the table. A stretcher further stabilizes them.

Table Seating

The beauty of the farmhouse table is that whatever dining room chairs you have – whether they’re matching or varying – work well. For the slightly more formal dining room with a farmhouse table, there are matching dining room seating sets. The simple informality of the wood table also invites eclectic chairs with varying fabrics, colors and patterns. In addition to chairs, it’s typical to see bench seating around a table that adds to the room’s casual country charm.

The shape, finish and type of base you choose can give your farmhouse table its distinction. Whether you’re hosting a holiday harvest party or a simple sit-down dinner for your family, home-cooked meals always taste better at a substantial and beautifully crafted farmhouse dining table.
