Dining Table Sets

If you’re looking forward to creating fond memories, consider gathering friends and family around a beautiful, well-crafted dining table and chair set. Choosing a set for your space means carefully measuring how much table you can fit. Let us at Pottery Barn give you tips on how to select your style, size and type of dining table set for the best of times to come.

Extending Dining Table Sets

Square, oval and round – many dining tables are extendable with either a drop-in leaf or one or two lift-up leaves. As an example, a rectangular table with a drop-in leaf might measure 78" long unextended and 98" long extended. A rectangular table with two drop-in leaves can extend to 128" long for extra large dinner parties. A round 48"-diameter table can expand to a 72"-long oval dining table with a drop-in leaf, as another example. A kitchen table, typically with two lift-up leaves, turns into a space-saving demilune or rectangular console when the leaves are dropped down.

Types of Dining Table Bases

Beautiful and bold dining table bases include trestles with X-shaped supports and keyed-through tenons, large baluster posts with cove and ogee details, pedestals with metal support braces or slim legs for a modern look. Smaller kitchen table sets may have bases with built-in shelving for extra storage for dinnerware or linens.

Types of Dining Room Chair Styles

For traditional dining rooms, you’ll find comfortable chairs with ladder-, scroll-, fiddle- or X-shaped backs and scooped seats. Contemporary looks include upholstered Parson-style chairs, with or without arms and contoured slatted backrests. For a casual, natural touch in your home, choose seagrass dining chairs made from handwoven natural fibers covering a foam-padded seat or rush seats with curved wood backs.

Bench-style seating accommodates many people around your dining table. A bench and table set is quite versatile. Along with a dining bench on either or both sides of the table, dining chairs can also fill in space for additional seating. Benches typically range in widths of 74" to 86".

Counter-height Sets

For a more casual dining spot, consider a counter height table and stool set. The tables are typically 36" to 37" high, with stools about 24" to 25" high. They’re designed for comfortable, pub-style eating. Some counter-height sets have built-in drawer storage, making them functional kitchen islands and food-prepping stations, too. Depending on the style, counter-height sets usually come with two or four stools.

Table and Buffet Sets

Table and buffet sets offer you a coordinated look but leave lots of room for customization when it comes to seating. Buffets are ideal for providing ample storage to keep dinnerware and table linens within easy reach. They’re also great for self-serve dinners, a spread of desserts or an at-home bar setup. A buffet, typically 63" to 75" wide, holds lots of wine bottles and stemware for your parties. Buffets come with cabinet doors or drawers, depending on the style.

For a one-of-a-kind table and buffet set, choose your own dining chairs from our collection of upholstered, slipcovered, leather and wood styles. You have the choice of mixing or matching all types of dining room chairs when purchasing separately.

Remember to allow for about 24" of space per person when choosing a dining table set or a table and separate chairs. That way, everyone will be more than comfortable enough to indulge for hours during those holiday and special-occasion dinner parties.
