Outdoor Halloween Decorations
As one of the most versatile holidays of the year, Halloween is a time to celebrate your creativity. Set the scene for a fall harvest party with autumn-themed doormats and serveware, or put on a holiday cocktail party featuring a dark and stormy Halloween punch. Surprise trick-or-treaters with cute cat pumpkins or freak the neighbors out by making your yard a graveyard. Whether you want to keep it simple with small decorative items like pumpkins and candles or put on a neighborhood-stopping show, we’re here to help.
With the holidays approaching, Halloween harvest celebrations are a perfect excuse to bring friends, family and neighbors together for a fun gathering. To set a spooky scene for the outdoor festivities, drape a string of skull lights, perhaps accessorized with faux cobwebs, over the doorway. Swap out the original doormat at your front door with a Halloween-themed doormat featuring crows, cauldrons and other classic images. Line the walkway with candles and lanterns. For a hair-raising effect, set up a chair on the front porch with a creepy skeleton.
Like many people, you probably associate Halloween with pumpkins. Here at Pottery Barn, our pumpkin shop, has just what you need to make an unforgettable display. If you don’t like the hassle and potential safety hazard of carving a pumpkin, consider making a family of black cat pumpkins. Start by getting a handful of real or faux pumpkins in assorted sizes. Paint them black, except for the eyes, which are painted white. Complete their faces with felt noses and pipe cleaner whiskers. Alternatively, for a spooky sight, prop up a horseman figure at your front door, and put a jack-o-lantern head in one of his hands. A glowing candles completes the eerie effect.
For adults, a spooky cocktail party is a great way to celebrate the holiday. With ginger beer, brandied cherries, rum, lychees and lime juice, you can make a terrific Halloween rum punch that guests will love. Pour drinks from a glass drink dispenser, filled with ice, into tall glasses. Serve from a silver tray. Surround the drink area with a skull decanter and skull shot glasses filled with extra rum.
No holiday celebration is complete without food, and there are many crowd favorites for this October holiday. In a pumpkin serving bowl, set out a sweet and savory snack mix with candy corn, pretzels, peanuts and pieces of square-shaped cereal like Chex. For a healthy snack, peel tangerines and add a stalk of celery, complete with a leaf, to each. The end result looks like a pumpkin! For a tasty beverage, heat up apple cider and serve, steaming hot, with a pinch of cinnamon from a sturdy mug. Search for serveware in our Halloween tabletop collection accessories.
Of course, if you invite guests over for an outdoor party, you’ll need to accessorize more than just the table. To spruce up benches and chairs, check out our selection of Halloween pillows. Here you can find decor like a pumpkin-themed pillow to put on a wicker chair. Against white fabric, an orange pillow looks especially striking. For a long seating area like a couch, add multiple pillows to really create a festive atmosphere. Put it near a stairway, and hang objects like bats and ghosts from the surrounding pillars.
The highlight of the show will be the front door and the table area, but don’t forget about the yard. In our Halloween decor selection, look for gravestones and tombstones to turn your property into a makeshift graveyard. Adorn them with faux crows to complete the look. Put a sign in the yard directing visitors to the front door, which you can accessorize with a broomstick, a harvest wreath and a lit skeleton for a haunting effect.
