How to Choose the Right Rug for Your Space
So you’ve refreshed your walls, updated your decor and stocked up on seasonal essentials - but what about your floors? Choosing the right rug for your space can feel like no small feat – but with a little guidance, it’s easy to put this finishing touch on every room in the house.
Armed with questions and craving a new look, we called in the experts to cover the basics. If you’re on the hunt for a new rug, here’s an easy-to-follow guide to take the guesswork out of rug buying. First, let’s head to the dining room.
For the Dining Room
A rug in the dining room seems like a stain waiting to happen, right? Wrong. When choosing a rug for the dining room, our style experts recommend considering the material. A natural fiber rug is best suited for taking on life’s little messes – it’s easy to clean, and even easier to shake out.
When it comes to size, there are a few things to consider. You’ll want to make sure the rug is large enough to completely house your table and chairs, making it easy for guests to come and go.
The rug should be proportional to your table, so if you have a classic round table that seats four, you might consider a rug that measures eight feet by eight feet. A rectangular table that seats six might work best with a ten-by-eight option.
For the Living Room
Life happens here in this shared space. Candid conversations, game nights and spontaneous dance parties require a comfortable, family-friendly option. Enter wool, a durable material that’s extra-cozy underfoot.
Most living rooms are primed for a square or rectangular rug. We recommend choosing a size that will allow the legs of all the furniture to be placed on the carpet, but if just the front legs fit, that’s OK. Try using masking tape to outline the dimensions of the rug you’re considering so you can envision what will work.

For the Bedroom
We’ve covered the dining room and the living room, but what about the bedroom? Cozy is always best, so you can sink your toes into warmth first thing in the morning.
Here, we suggest going with wool – it’s durable, comfortable and easy to clean. When it comes to size, aim to get all legs of the furniture on the rug. If you have a queen bed and side tables, a rug that is nine feet by nine feet is a great choice.
Hallways and Entryways
For hardworking areas, like a hallway, entryway or kitchen, you’ll need an equally hardworking rug, and synthetics are up for the job. These easy-to-clean woven options can be used in damp environments, and many types can even be used outdoors.
Hallways and kitchens do best with runners, and size will depend on the length and width of your hallway. Tip: if you want to make this area appear larger, use the longest length rug you can to fill the area.
Your Room, Your Way
When it comes to finding your next rug, don’t be afraid to walk on the wild side. Layer existing carpet for a brand new look, or stack an eight-by-ten wool rug on top of a nine-by-twelve natural fiber rug for a bohemian feel. No matter the room, make it a reflection of you and your style.
