Media Stands & Consoles

Your living room or family room is one of the most important rooms in the home. It’s where you get together, relax, play with your children and watch television. Having the right media stand and console is paramount for the ability to see your television at a comfortable angle, and to have ample storage space for accessories and other items. Different media stands and consoles work well for different needs, so carefully consider your living space before you decide on one.

A media center can be large enough to hold your flat-screen television, Blu-ray player, video game console and all of your needed accessories, or it simply can be a decorative piece of furniture to place your television on. Choose a media center or console first based on your storage needs. If you have a lot of DVDs, Blu-ray discs and other media, it might be best to look for a media console that has several cabinets and drawer spaces to store all of your items. Placing an ottoman in your living room or den is another great way to solve a storage problem, as ottomans and stools are great for stowing remotes and other accessories.

Color and style are also important considerations when choosing your media console. Media consoles are available in a myriad of different colors and styles. Opt for an urbane, metal look, or go for lightly colored finished wood. A gray, rustic media console is another consideration. Unless your goal is to mix and match, the media console should already match the existing living room furniture. Pottery Barn has living room furniture collections in complete styles and finishes, so you never have to worry about your furniture not matching. A coffee table is available that easily coordinates with your media console, or shelving or stools are available for a perfect match.

If you have little ones, this is also a consideration when choosing a media console. Similarly to some styles of coffee tables some decorative media consoles may have sharp corners right at a toddler’s height. If your little one is learning to walk around the living room, opt for an elegant, but safe media console that’s well above his height, with doors that close for keeping items out of the reach of little hands. A media suite in a hutch style is a great idea, with high shelving and enough room to either place the television on the hutch, or mount it safely onto the wall.
